This is a thread regarding elemental Jutsu and information on them. If you're confused about anything that refers to elements or are looking for aid or reference for elemental Jutsu, this is your thread to look to. This thread will list every Elemental Release that's been seen and those that are available to your character.
What Elemental Release is:
Elemental Release is the usage of one of the five elements; Wind, Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth. According to Kakashi, elements are the basis of all Jutsu, and everyone's chakra naturally leans toward a specific element. Jōnin usually are able to manipulate multiple elements through Jutsu, though, never at the same time. One can only use one element at a time.
Kekkei Genkai Elements:
There are special elements; Mokuton and Hyōton that are a result of Kekkei Genkai. A Kekkei Genkai that's needed to combine two different elemental chakra to create a completely different element, or, something that's described as something that's not an element at all by Yamato. Mokuton uses Doton and Suiton. Hyōton uses Suiton and Fūton.
Available Elements:
Katon: The element of fire deals with everything from blowing out a massive amount of flames to creating small sparks. All of the Jutsu within the Fire Element end with the Ram seal.
Suiton: The element of water deals with everything from creating torrents of water to creating water without a source.
Raiton: The element of lightning deals with everything from creating bolts of lightning to projecting weak currents.
Doton: The element of earth deals with everything from creating walls of earth to manipulating mud.
Fūton: The element of wind deals with everything from creating gusts of wind to blades of wind.
Kekkei Genkai Elements:
Mokuton: The combination of Water and Earth, creating a new Wood Element that can be used in a number of ways. This is unique to Shodai and Yamato (Possibly Senju clan).
Hyōton: The combination of Water and Wind, creating a new Ice Element that can be used in a number of ways. This is unique to Haku's Clan.
Yōganton: The combination of Fire and Earth to create the Lava Element. This is unique to Kazan.
Kinton: The combination of Fire and Earth, creating a new Metal Element that can be used in a number of ways. This is unique to Setsuna Shugi. Called "Chi no Tama".
Rinton: The combination of Fire and Wind, creating a new White Phosphorus Element that can be used in a number of ways. Unique to Asemo Hanzo.
Potential Kekkei Genkai Elements:
Kusaton: The combination of Water and Earth, creating a new Grass Element.
Yūton: The combination of Water and Earth, creating a new Oil Element.
The Name's Meaning:
Most people get confused when it comes to my thing about Elemental Releases (Jutsu that end in "Ton") but since they don't really understand where the whole Release thing comes from, they usually attach it to a lot of things that it shouldn't apply to. Most of the elements in the Naruto Universe come from Gotonpō, which roughly translates to [Five Evasion Arts]. These five elements were used by Ninja in different ways:
There was Katon no Jutsu (Art of Fire Evasion); which was the usage of bombs, smokescreens, or fireworks.
Doton no Jutsu (Art of Earth Evasion); which was hiding in dirt, or using dirt to blind a person.
Suiton no Jutsu (Art of Water Evasion); which was the usage of water for concealment or to blind an offender.
Mokuton no Jutsu (Art of Wood Evasion); which was using trees for concealment, climbing or moving from one tree to the next.
And Kinton no Jutsu (Art of Metal Evasion); which was the usage of such things as shuriken or other metal weaponry, most often using those blades to reflect light and blind the opponent.
Gotonpō was taken and used in fiction, not just Naruto. One form of fiction that uses Gotonpō is SquareEnix's Final Fantasy series, early games had some of the Ninja using Gotonpō as elemental attacks much like the Black Mages of the series, and more recent, the Ninja Class in the Final Fantasy Tactics series have been seen using Gotonpō.
Naturally, the five base elements were basically taken from Gotonpō with the exception of Fūton (Wind Release) and Raiton (Lightning Release). People often think that due to the fact that it's translated to "Release" that it's because the person is releasing it from their body, but "Ton" literally means "Hide" or "Conceal" sometimes even "Escape" which has nothing to do with the releasing of any element. "Ton" is attached at the end to add that Ninja feel to it.
